Training Video Post

I am getting ready for Portugal and decided to put up a video of training. It was definatly not my best training but I just wanted to show what I was planning on. I hope to do a 16.4 which would put me in finals if done at my best. We will see how it goes at Portugal. :)

Routine at Nationals gone Wrong :)

Hello everyone,

I just found this old routine and wanted to post it. It is of me trying Jason Burnett's Beijing Olympic routine in 2008. It did not work out to well. I started good and then lost height very quickly and ended up scraping my head on the trampoline and flying off. Check it out :)

This video is also on the "Videos" tab and can be viewed at anytime :)

Level 3 Technical

Hello everyone, I am currently taking my level three technical course at Skyriders. It is nice to see some coaches that I have not seen for a while such as the funny guys from Airborne trampoline. We basically reviewed a lot of level 2  material. Spotting Birani's, back fulls, rudys and randys  took a long time today to get through. Dave Ross is the instructor and went into detail about the mechanics of trampoline. I have gone up with Florin from Halton Hills and he is having a good time learning about the world of trampoline.  I have to be up early tomorrow so I will leave it here just as a quick update:)

Goodnight everyone,

Greg

Coaching tutorials

Hello everyone,

I will be starting a video tutorial aspect of my websites and just wanted to inform everyone to look out for it. I will be taking videos of myself and other athletes learning skills and explaining some ways I teach certain skills based on my coaching and athletic experience. I will be combining my gymnastics and my trampoline background in these tutorials. Example:

I will make a video of how to teach a proper handstand and then make a video of how a handstand will help teach an athlete a front layout.

I will be building up to hard skills such as triple flips and multi twisting singles and doubles. I will be building skills up WITHOUT a foam pit or belt. Not every club has it and coaches should be able to teach any skill with or without the belt.

Again I know I say this all the time but this is MY OPINION. It is simply to coaches and athletes thinking about potentially different ways to learn skills.

Today I will try to make a tutorial about how I teach a handstand if I can find an athlete who can do a good one at summer camp or during my private lessons today.

Please leave comments and suggestions :)

thanks:)

Training Update

For the last few months that I have not been updating my blog I have been working full time summer camp at Halton Hills Gymnastics. I have been doing many private lessons as well for cheerleaders and trampolinists. Many people come up to me because in Halton Hills I am one of the few coaches that have high level practical experience in gymnastics and trampoline. I have started scouting for new trampoline athletes to put into the competitive stream. Currently we are up to about 12-14 athletes all ranging from 9-17 years of age. There is hope for a new trampoline to be put into Halton Hills so that we have our first 7x14 foot olympic sized trampoline. The goal is to increase the already dug in 6x12 foot hole and then put the olympic sized trampoline in and take the smaller trampoline out and use it as a recreational trampoline or for Interclub athletes.

I have been training as much as I can for a full time worker who only has one option of training everyday. I am currently looking for a new place to train that is closer to home where I can get more hours because Skyriders is simply to far for someone who has to work 50 hours a week, keep the competitive program running, keep my school notes up to date, train for Portugal in September, keep my networking skills up to par and try to have a social life of some sort.

As for my training I have been literally "snapping". I comfortably competed optionals that ranged from 18.5-18.8 seconds in the previous year. I have worked on some techniques that have increased my time of flight to 19.72+. The techniques are based out of other countries, not Canada, and I would go into great detail but unfortunately I can not spill everyone of the ideas that are in my head. I would like to keep a small competative advantage. The day i quit competing or go to the olympics I will write an entire book of all the little tricks I have learned from coaches around the world. One thing I can say is, NEVER PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET IN TERMS OF WHO COACHES YOU. Everyone has something to offer no matter who they are. Keep an open mind and be willing to try anything. I learned something from some visitors from skyriders a few days ago and the change is unbelievable and according to everyone in Canada this technique should never be done. Just goes to show that no matter how intelligent someone is they can always be wrong.

I have been focusing mainly on height and have been doing drills where the minimum time of flight per skill has to be 2 seconds. The next phase will be cleaning up the form but that is a long ways away. Once I can do a 20 second optional 3/4 times then I will start to focus on the form which will inevitably reduce my time of flight slightly at first until I get the hang of it.

I have gotten my fall schedule laid out for school but not training or work quite yet. I will be writing more when I go back to school because I will have more free time to write about things I learn in school. I am trying to figure out how to put my notes up on this website but it does not seem to happen very easily.

Just thought I would give a small update on the comings and goes of my summer for those who are interested. If there are is anything you would like me to write about please let me know. As you know I have twitter now and I check that all the time. fell free to message me:)

Thanks:)

Canada Kicks Butt At Olympics 2012

I hope all of you trampoline fans were watching the olympics on August 3rd and 4rth. Canada  sent Jason Burnett, Rosie Maclennan and Karen Cockburn to represent Canada at the 2012 Olympics. All of the athletes had great preliminary routines and solidified a spot in finals. Unfortunately Jason caught an unlucky bounce and fell doing a very hard routine compared to the other athletes. I have seen him do that routine many times and know that given another chance he would have placed much better. Karen looked very solid as well and showed off her form that is unmatched in trampoline. She solidified a 4th place finish  with a slightly shaky routine. Rosie managed to do the best routines I have ever seen her do and got Canada's first gold medal of the 2012 olympics. It truly was a great routine and I am very happy she went big and took the chance. If  athletes do not keep pushing their skills the sport will get boring. Congrats again you guys and do not let yourself slow down with the olympics being over. Continue to train hard and destroy the competition, only after a nice little well deserved break.
